"Someday You'll Appreciate Your Mother."
2010
24x30, mixed media on canvas
Included text: "Many Catholics have heard of "The Cult of Mary": a devout following of people who are loyal to the favors and protection of the Blessed Mother. My mother swears by it. But what if there is some deeper significance to the Blessed Mother's devotion? My mother came to America, without her parents, at a very young age. As a result, she grew to miss her mother's physical presence in her life. After their mother died, my mother and her sisters developed an acute devotion to Mary. My grandmother was also devoted to Mary and had lost her own mother at a very young age. With a sense of comfort, they all turned to the Blessed Mother: a surrogate, heavenly mother, perhaps to fill the void their own earthly mothers had left behind."
