Eyes of the Beholder
2009
18x24, oil/collage on canvas
In this piece, I have combined my interests in art history, world religion and cultural mythology to compare and confront the manner in which ancient cultures have represented their gods and deities, as well as their ideals of human physical form. I find it fascinating how ancient cultures can be found with no exposure to each other, and yet can share similarities in symbolism and stylistic representation, while still maintaining their own uniquely recognizable styles. Occasionally, however, those similarities begin to blur and influence each other over time, which increases my fascination in the cultures who created them, as well as admiration for the beauty of their differences.

Only You Can Decide What Is Important To You,
Self -Portrait
2008
24 x 30, oil on canvas
Included text:
"I like to see evidence of creation, both artistic and personal. I want to see the process from which an idea stems and a creation materializes. I believe origins are just as important as destination. Everything is a cycle, including ourselves, including our creative process. If we deny or ignore this, then we fail to acknowledge all that we have accomplished. And, if we do not place importance on where we have come from then we have no ability to truly appreciate where we are now and who we will be in the future, both creatively and personally, as our creativity often relies on our past and our experiences of all kinds."
